The first day is called Ashura and the tenth day is called Ashura Hamam which literally means, 'prayer of the rack'. Why is this day called 'Ashura'? In this year Imam Husayn son of the Prophet Muhamamd is the martyr. Imam Hussain was the grandson of the first Imam and the third Imam. A Shia is a person who follows Prophet Muhammad. The Shi'a call the other sections of the Muslim community as Imams. Why is the tenth day called Ashura? On the tenth day of the month of Muharram, Imam Husayn was martyred. He was a courageous Muslim who defended his community. His shrine was located in Karbala. Imam Husayn had never accepted an Islamic State.
